Information

Title

Edwin Van Meter Evans Memorial (NY)

Description

A bronze tablet affixed to a boulder that commemorates Edwin V. Evans, a member of the 16th Infantry Regiment who was killed in action in France on July 20, 1918. Evans was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (citation below).

The boulder is located on Governors Island at the South end of Fort Jay parade ground, Evans Road.

The marker was laid in 1922 or later. This is known because the 16th Infantry Regiment established its headquarters at Fort Jay, Governors Island in that year. The term “World Wars” in the inscription seems to indicate it was placed after the onset of the Second World War, though that is not known for certain as the tablet could have been amended.
