Information

Title

Shreveport World War I Memorial Plaque (LA)

Date

dedicated 1923

Description

A plaque in the foyer of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce honors the men and women of Shreveport and Caddo Parish who served in World War I. The plaque features outset corners and an elaborate floral border.  At its center the staffs of a US and Louisiana state flag emerge from a wreath; above and below are banners and inscriptions, and at base is the insignia of the DAR. Among the inscriptions is the original Pledge of Allegiance.

The plaque was dedicated in 1923, when the building was the just-constructed Shreve Memorial Library (it only became the Chamber of Commerce in 1980). It was sponsored by the Shreveport chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; a World War I memorial flagpole outside the library dedicated the same year to Caddo Parish soldiers and sailors was sponsrored by the DAR's Caddo Chapter.
