Information

Title

King County World War I Memorial Plaques (WA)

Date

dedicated 1931; rededicated April 6, 2017

Description

Two bronze memorial plaques that honor public employees who took part in World War I are located in the King County Courthouse’s Fourth Avenue entry niche (500 block of Fourth Avenue). The plaques face each other on opposite walls flanking the entry doors.  One honors city employees, and the other honors county employees. They are identical other than inscriptions.  Each is topped with an eagle with outstretched wings standing atop a US shield, across which is inscribed "Honor Roll."

The plaques, 65-inches tall by 24-inches wide, were created and dedicated in 1931.  They were restored and rededicated on April 6, 2017, the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I. Here is the ceremony announcement that went out to all King County Employees:

"Dear Fellow King County employee,

Today, April 6, marks the 100th anniversary of our nation’s entry into World War I. Over 60,000 residents of Washington served in the war efforts, including more than 500 government employees from King County and Seattle.

In 1931, King County and the City of Seattle affixed bronze plaques at the 4th Avenue entrance to the County-City Building — now the King County Courthouse — to honor the service of these brave men and women.

You may have noticed that those plaques had become badly weathered over the last 86 years. That’s why Councilmember Reagan Dunn, Councilmember Rod Dembowski and Senior Deputy Executive Fred Jarrett are hosting a ceremony at 11 a.m. today to unveil the restored and repaired plaques, which have been brought back to their original beauty."

Conservation history:

Both plaques were restored in March 2017 by Decorative Metal Arts, 45 B S Spokane Street, Seattle, WA 98134, 206.782.4009.

The restoration and conservation process included the following: (1) removing existing finish/paint from front and side surfaces of plaques without damaging or altering existing decorative elements and type, (2) restoring dark brown tone using a chemical patina process and highlighting raised areas of the casting, and (3) applying satin clear coat (Polane) to surface of the plaques.

The plaques were removed, transported for restoration, and reinstalled by ArtSite Ltd., LLC, PO Box 81121, Seattle, WA 98108
